Japanese Bobtail

OVERVIEW

Japanese Bobtails are a Japanese symbol for good luck. You might have seen a statue of one with an upraised paw in your favorite sushi joint. This maneki-neko (or “beckoning cat”) attracts prosperity and positive vibes wherever she's found.

The breed is featured throughout centuries of Japanese art, up to today's Pokémon and Hello Kitty! Let the Japanese Bobtail lure you into a local shelter and thank your lucky stars that you found each other.

This breed can grow to between 5-10 pounds and lives an average of 15-18 years.

BEHAVIOR & TRAINING

WHAT IS THE JAPANESE BOBTAIL'S PERSONALITY LIKE?

Japanese Bobtails are curious explorers of their terrain. They're gregarious kitties who get along well with other pets (even dogs!) and children alike. Both durable and playful, Japanese Bobtails are a great choice for families with little ones. This breed loves her people and basks in their attention.

WHAT IS JAPANESE BOBTAIL BEHAVIOR LIKE?

Intelligent and active, Japanese Bobtails sing and chirp when they have something to say to you. That's right: this intensely vocal breed might sound more like she's singing than talking to you. Enjoy your daily serenades! She'll even happily ride on your shoulder to supervise your household's goings-on.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY JAPANESE BOBTAIL ENTERTAINED?

Japanese Bobtails are active kitties—they'll enjoy roadtrips, feline agility competitions, obstacle courses, and playing with kids. This breed will also carry things around in her mouth, bat balls around with her paws, and play fetch with you.

CARE & HEALTH

WHAT DO JAPANESE BOBTAILS LOOK LIKE AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?

As their name suggests, Japanese Bobtails don't have much in the way of a tail—though no two cat tails are the same! They're not rumpies, though. They're bobtails——their butts resemble a bunny's. This breed mostly comes with a white base coat marked with color splashes.

Plan to comb or brush your Japanese Bobtail's fur a few times a week.

WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO JAPANESE BOBTAILS HAVE?

As a breed, Japanese Bobtails are generally healthy. But they're notorious bingers and beggars, so be mindful of portion control.

Remember that cats often hide disease symptoms! It's important to bring your furry friend in for veterinary checkups at least once a year.

IDEAL FAMILY

ARE JAPANESE BOBTAILS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES?

Japanese Bobtails aren't among the breeds generally recommended for allergy sufferers.

Remember that no breed is 100% hypoallergenic, and any breed can aggravate allergies.

WHAT IS MY JAPANESE BOBTAIL'S BEST DAY?

Japanese Bobtails are playful and social, so throw a ball for them to chase and bring back to you. This chatty catty will also enjoy sitting with you to tell you about her day or gently roughhousing with your little ones. Hey, it's never to early to learn that when she's exposing that furry belly, she's just trying to trap your hand and wrestle. She'll keep your shoulders warm, where she'll ride while you do chores around the house or watch television in the evening. And if you're really looking to shake things up, consider taking yours on the road! Japanese Bobtails do well in campers and will welcome the chance to see more of the world with you.

SHOULD I ADOPT A JAPANESE BOBTAIL?

If you're looking for a highly interactive feline friend, say konnichi wa to the Japanese Bobtail. She'll be happy to keep you company wherever your travels take you both. Bring this breed home, and you'll both be fortunate to have found one another.
